What is Hospice?
Hospice is a team of professional and non-professional people who provide medical care, compassion and support to the terminally ill and their families, primarily in the home.
Hospice Philosophy
Hospice care strives to create an environment which enhances the quality of life and promotes the patients’ sense of dignity and control of their own lives. Hospice does not substitute for, nor replace existing medical facilities or services. Rather, Hospice care is coordinated with the patient’s physician and other community services. Hospice referrals may be initiated by patients, family members, friends or health care professionals.
Patients and families shall have access to Presentation Hospice regardless of age, race, national origin, handicap, advance directive preference, diagnosis or financial resources.
Who does Hospice serve?
Any person living within a 50 mile radius of Carrington, North Dakota who:
- Has a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less
- Is no longer undergoing curative treatment
- Accepts the principles of Hospice care
- Has a primary physician who agrees with Hospice principles
- Has an identified caregiver to provide personal care
What does Hospice cost?
Some payment options are Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance.
Admission to the program is based on need rather than ability to pay.
Hospice Services
The Presentation Hospice team works with each patient’s own physician in coordinating care, allowing patients to be comfortable at home. The Hospice team provides:
- Pain and symptom management
- Professional nursing care
- Therapeutic social work intervention for individuals and families utilizing a problem solving approach
- Spiritual care from the Hospice Chaplain, in coordination with the family’s own religious network
- Medical social services to link families with financial, legal or social resources as needed
- Physical, occupational and speech therapies
- Volunteer services to offer respite for the family
- Bereavement support by providing care from the time of admission until at least thirteen months after the patient dies
- Short-term in-patient care for pain and symptom management or for family respite
- Dietary counseling
The Presentation Hospice Team
is available to patients and families
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Presentation Hospice is very much a people-oriented program, dependent on various sources for support. Volunteers are needed to help with:

v Transportation and shopping
v Companion service
v Office and clerical support
v Fundraising
v Public education
Community support helps ensure that services will always be available. Hospice welcomes contributions in the form of:
